Ever been stuck with a severed foot (halloween joke) in your mouth? In Social Media, it happens more than you think. Too often, laziness is the cause of PR disasters on Social Media. While marketing on social media can take your business to the next level, it can also take it down a peg leg or two. Nobody ever sets out to create a social media campaign that creates little buzz or offends people. #WhyIStayed – DiGiorno

Why did I stay? To see the tremendous backlash from this attempted hashtag. When this tweet came out, there was a lot of attention on domestic violence stemming from the numerous NFL cases. Twitter users used the #WhyIStayed as a way to tell others why they stayed with their significant other after domestic violence occurred. If this doesn’t raise red flags then I don’t know what does. You would have to have a pretty mean social media team to be able to pull off a domestic violence and frozen pizza comparison without offending people.

Defriend for a Whopper

Facebook is a place to meet new friends and keep in touch with current friends. Not according to Burger King. In 2009, Burger King launched a contest on Facebook, giving everybody who unfriended 10 people on Facebook a free Whopper. Needless to say, Facebook was not a fan of this and immediately put the kibosh on the whole campaign. The lesson to learn from this terrifying social media campaign is that you should always know the rules of the site you are using!

Redskins Pride

If you haven’t heard, the NFL football team, The Washington Redskins, is under scrutiny because many think that their name is racist. Trying to defend the name, the Redskins organization started a hashtag named #redskinspride in which fans were supposed to send Senator Harry Reid, an opponent of the name, a tweet saying what the team means to them. Instead, fans used this as an opportunity to tweet pictures of whites killing Native Americans in protest. When attempting to start a social media campaign, ALWAYS make sure you know your target market and how they will respond.
